Blog

I realize it's been a number of weeks since I've sent out a newsletter or wrote my latest blog so it's time to change that. My latest watercolor painting is Notre Dame cathedral in France which was recently in the news. At the time the media was overwhelmed with photos and stories of the beautiful cathedral being destroyed by fire. It seemed a bit too much at the time which is what inspired me to do my latest painting. I think it's important for an artist to try to capture a  person, place or subject in time because It helps preserve its memory. While I'm not Catholic I do realize that this is one of the world's greatest landmarks! While I was working it occurred to me how great but, yet odd that I would take on this great subject. If someone would have told me 20 years ago that I would be painting French Gothic architecture that's over 800 years old I would have probably laughed at you. Yet here  I am today and having done it I can honestly say it is something quite enjoyable and very fulfilling! I really would like to say thank you to my good artist friend Paul Jackson for encouraging me to take on such a strong subject! In fact it really has me thinking lately about the importance of what I want to paint and the message I want to show. It's important for artists to try to attain Higher Goals and show or give a message in their painting. Painting this subject was something that gave me strong emotions realizing the importance of this great magnificent structure. I hope you enjoy my painting as much as I do! www.donwhitesel.com
