The Christmas Train

The Christmas Train
I liked the idea of doing holiday painting with a train in it right from the start. The idea came to me one night recently while watching the Holiday movie The Polar Express. My painting had to be different of course, so I decided to use the a real Train Station. Many years ago I was in a watercolor workshop plein air painting with Mel Stabin. We visited the beautiful Historic Glen Mills train station which is located just outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania off the main line. I had been trying to do a different painting of this train station in the studio on and off for a number of years. Then one night the idea came to me about doing a winter time theme painting but, with a story line. I think the idea of a old steam train is great and really works well. In fact my Grandfather and Aunt both worked in the Altoona train shops for the Pennsylvania railroad for many years. So I think this is a great holiday painting that celebrates trains and a piece of history as well.
