New Painting

Exotic Bouquet

People are naturally curious about the inspiration of a painting and its story. Over the years I really enjoy sharing my thought process for creating a new work of art. My latest watercolor painting is titled Exotic Bouquet 15 x 22" on Arches watercolor paper. The reference photos in my Studio were ones that I had taken nearly 20 years ago while out in the field drawing and Plein Air painting. At the time, I happened to come across at least three or four Rose Gardens of several very unusual varieties. I did at least several Master drawings and studies of the Roses. Over the years there were several times that I sat down to paint them but, decided to wait for the right time.

In fact my Dad actually considered becoming a florist before he became a Episcopal minister. My Dad's cousin (the late Andy Moore) was also one of my biggest mentors and a gifted watercolor artist that had a touch for floral paintings. In fact it was my dad who helped get me started in art when I was about ten or twelve. I remember spending time in the studio learning with Uncle Andy any chance I got. It's amazing how one subject can make you think about different things in your life both past and present. Art is a fantastic lifelong journey that allows me to combine my love of wildlife and other interests and capture them in time. www.donwhitesel.com

This is a nice picture as well as a nice story to go along with it. I'm one of the few people who still enjoys still life of flowers. Anyway, keep up the good work!
