Seascapes in Watercolor

Maine Lobsterman
One of the Fondest Memories that I have was when my Aunt Helen who lived in Altoona, Pa would take me out to buy art books on drawing and painting. My Aunt spent many years working as a Nurse in the train shops for the Pennsylvania Railroad in Altoona. When we went out shopping I would always look for the Walter Foster art instruction books because they're great for a younger audience or someone just starting out. I recall spending many hours looking at seascapes paintings and other subjects as well.
Today I still feel that same excitement when I complete a painting especially a seascape. My latest watercolor painting (pictured) is titled Maine Lobsterman 15 x 22 on 300lb Kilimanjaro watercolor paper. I wanted to do something a little different with this one to really bring out the coastal colors! The paper used is Kilimanjaro a very natural white paper and colors tends to really make color sing or pop. You'll notice in the foreground the complementary color of cobalt turquoise along long with cobalt blue and ultramarine blue. They're beautiful sea like colors that draw the painting out and give it more feeling and excitement.
My late artist friend Carlton Plummer Chlemford, Massachusetts and Boothbay, Maine loved to use those colors along with others on his pallet. Carlton was a world-class Seascape painter that had a profound effect on my art work. Maine subjects in particular has one of the most gorgeous coastlines you'll ever see which is full of Lobster boats and Lighthouses. I'm planning to continue using the Kilimanjaro and look forward to producing more new seascape and landscape paintings with it. www.donwhitesel.com
